So as I mentioned previously we have never been to the north of the Serengeti before and so we have never seen a river crossing. Therefore today was all about the Mara River and the wildebeest.
We left camp about 7.30. As we drove towards the river we saw large herds of wildebeest who had already crossed. Apparently they had started crossing earlier this year and so really we were just catching the tail end of the crossings.
Other interesting sightings included vultures on a kill and crocodiles resting by the river.
By mid morning we saw some small herds gathering on the far bank but nothing much happened. Then about 11ish we saw a much larger group who also didn’t look like they were going to cross……when suddenly they just went for it!!
We had a very good view of the crossing and luckily there were only about 15 cars watching (rather than the 100+ I believe you can get at the height of the crossing season). Everyone was well behaved, no jostling for position etc.
So mission accomplished…we had seen a river crossing. After that we did see yet another group on the far bank but again nothing happened.
We found a nice spot for lunch with some giraffe and zebra. We spent the afternoon around the river, which is beautiful. We spent some time watching some hippos but didn’t see any more crossings.
About 4 o’clock everything seemed quite quiet after the excitement of the morning so we decided to call it a day and head back to camp for a cold beer and a glass of wine.
